Justice Must Mean More Than Speed: Lessons from the Nasrapur Child Rape and Murder Case
The brutual rape and murder of a young girl in Maharastra Nasrapur shocked the whole country. The crime was not only horrifying because of its cruelty but also because it once agin showed that children and women remain vulnerable even with strict laws. The Nasrapur case shows that relying only on punishment as a deterrent has its limits. The death penalty, although allowed in rare cases, cannot by itself prevent crimes against children. Real prevention needs better policing, ɔuicker intervention, awareness in the community monitoring of repeat offenders, gender- sensitive education, and improve child protection systems. Society must also challenge the cultural attitudes that allow violence against women and children. It is also important to strengthen support for victims.
